Motherhood Tie Dyed
Who am I? In a nut shell, I am Motherhood: Tie Dyed
My name is Tamara, but I have been referred to as Tami since the second grade. I am 30 years young. I love Earl Grey and Chai tea lattes, I love bright colorful objects, I collect a ridiculous amount of things, give me...all the things! I have an abundance of food sensitivities. I am an advocate and often speak up for other's sake (which has caused me lots of grief.) I am an artistic, creative soul who enjoys photography, dyeing, sewing, drawing, painting and writing. I am a half Puerto Rican hippie (if there is such a thing), I love the sunshine, and would rather be outdoors, as long as its above 40 degrees and sunny!
I am married to the man of my dreams, the man I fell in love with when I was 15. My husband Eric and I went to the same middle school and high school, and began dating the summer before our sophomore year. Since then I have been dubbed Sugs, as in short for sugar. We were voted most likely to marry each other in the senior year book, and were voted Prom King and Queen. We will be celebrating our 4 year wedding anniversary and 15 years of love a few days before Graeme's birthday this August. Still, after all this time, he is the man I day dream about.
I am 'mama' to the most handsome little dude, Graeme (pronounced Graham) who will be turning 2 in August. He is full of energy, loves being outdoors and uses sign language as his primary mode of communication. Sign language has been incredible for our little family, opening the door to communication for our son as early as 9 months! Graeme and I are commonly found outside exploring our acreage with our Golden Retriever Ruby Luz.
I am a nurse by trade and work full time midnights. I went to school a whopping 8 years before I graduated with a bachelors degree. Unable to make up my mind as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I went from a Spanish teacher, to fashion design, to interior design, and when all those options failed, I decided to go into nursing. I have worked in the same hospital since I was 19 years old. I started mopping floors and cleaning toilets, working my way up to where I am today. I currently work as a Pediatric nurse, but have also worked in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department.
Now onto the tie dye, in 2008 I took an old white stained t-shirt of my husband's and threw it in a boiling pot of green Rit Dye. When I took the t-shirt out of the dye bath I used it to make a hand bag. This was the beginning of a now 7 year love affair. As time has gone by, my dyeing and sewing have evolved. I originally sewed bag, after bag, after bag, making hundreds of bags for craft shows and custom orders. Using strictly upcycled and recycled materials, dyeing was a special part of the process. In February of last year I began Sugs' Shoppe, creating tie dye fashions for infants, toddlers, children and mamas alike! Of many things, I made tie dye slings, crocheted edge scarves and baby blankets, moccasins, head bands, pacifier straps, organic bath salts, scrubs and soaks, along with my bags and purses. I teamed up with other wonderful shops like Ollie & Ezri and SunnySide904 to tie dye fabrics so they could use them to create leggings, beanies, pillows and more. I recently put my shop on vacation mode to give myself a much needed breather from the demands of owning a small handmade shop. When I re-open, things will be much different, as I am stepping away from the sewing machine, and diving deeper into the dyeing world. My newest and most anticipated collaboration will be announced in the weeks to come and I am so excited for the new venture to take off!
